Herbert Kern Memorial Tournament by TV Rehau

Herbert Kern and the story of the tournament

Herbert Kern, born 1933, died 1997. He was a tabletennis legend and example, participating in the World Veterans' Championships and playing for the local clubs SG Regnitzlosau, TS/HR Selb, ASV Rehau and TV Rehau. He defined tabletennis in Rehau with his neverending effort for his team and the youth.

The Herbert Kern Memorial Tournament (till 1996: Team Tournament of the TV Rehau) is played since 1995 as a preparation for the new season. It is endowed with the challenge cup of the city of Rehau and material prizes of ca. EUR 1.500. To the right you can see how it has been developing: Introducing men's local leagues and women's events in 1997, participants rised heavily. In 1998 the youth events followed. 2003 clearly was extraordinary, because in that autumn the 11-point games and the 40mm balls were introduced and our event was the first regional possibility to test both. With 3496 participants in 13 years, our tournament is clearly the largest team competition in the German federal state of Bavaria and, as far as is known, the largest in the whole of South Germany.
In 2007 all events were put together from two weekends to one, speeding up competition further by amendments to the playing system. Doing so, we could fulfill the players' requests as well as size down our logistic efforts. Supported by numerous sponsors from economy, politics and private persons, the event is planned to continue for many more years.
